Question: Yesterday I installed a few recessed lights in my home. I’m decently experienced at home improvements and recessed lights are simple to install from above. However, a few hours after I installed them, I turned them on (they all worked originally), one of them has stopped working. I checked the wiring which I thought to be the culprit, but its fine. The bulb is good and brand-new, so I’m really not sure how to proceed.
Answer: If it is the last one in the line, you may need to check the connection in the light fixture upstream of it. Sometimes the factory installed wire to the top of the light socket can come loose, and may need to be reattached. The other thing it may be is all recessed lights have a heat overload in them (it is a little metal box about 1” by 3/8” with two black wires coming out of it) these are designed to break the circuit or cut power to the light bulb if it gets too hot. Sometimes they are just a little too sensitive and will work at first but once the heat rises they can stick off. If this is the case it is best to replace the entire fixture and return it to the store where purchased.
