We’ve asked our General Contractor in the past to give us ideas of the latest, hot trends in the remodeling industry as he sees them. This month, we thought we’d pick his brain on which trends we should avoid. Some of us, me included, have moments where we are stuck loving past trends. So I appreciate all the help I can get! Some of his suggestions of things to avoid were fairly obvious, but still bear repeating. For example, making a room smaller (for whatever reason) is not a trend to repeat anymore. Modern homes have wide open spaces and open floorplans. In addition, another obvious one would be to lower ceilings. New homes have high ceilings set off by elegant crown molding. Many people are also opting to avoid putting carpet in new remodels, opting instead for the easy to clean, lovely to look at, wood flooring. Many people are even modernizing their homes to have the wood flooring accent their modern or traditional bath vanity! Finally, the last idea he said to avoid would be to avoid closing off the garage to add more living space. If you find you need the extra space, consider building an addition first. A garage has a function to that is essential to most families too. I know I relish the fact that I no longer have to scrape my car in the winter!
