The electrical system in our home can be extremely dangerous to both children and pets alike. While a child can be taught to avoid dangerous hazards over time, pets will usually always be at risk. Since electricity can cause electrocution and possibly death, make sure to pet-proof your electrical system in order to protect your beloved furry family members.
Here are five ways to ensure your electrical system is secure and tamper free.
1. Mind Your Cords
Besides being a fire and tripping hazard, loose cords can be mistaken as a chew toy to unknowing pets. Make sure they are stowed away and not tangled. Looking for an eco-tip? Reuse paper towel or toilet paper rolls to weave cords through and keep them untangled.
2. Make Sure Plugs are Inserted Properly
When plugs aren’t pushed all the way into the outlet, prongs are exposed. These are an easy target for the tongue and claws of animals, which can lead to shock and electrocution. Make sure all plugs are pushed securely into the wall jack.
3. Never Keep Bulbs Exposed
Exposed bulbs, especially halogen bulbs, can get very hot. Make sure your bulbs are always covered so pets do not get burned. Pay special attention to standing lamps without a cover that are near shelves or bookcases.
4. Install GFCI Protected Outlets
This is especially true for wall outlets that power appliances near a water source (sinks, bathtubs, fish tanks, etc.). GFCI, or ground fault interpreter, protection will keep appliances and cords safe if exposed to water.
5. Know Where Underground Electrical Cables Lie
Be aware of where underground electrical or cable lines run in your backyard if you have pets. Ensure the lines are buried at an appropriate depth, especially if your dog is a digger.
