Sometimes the easiest questions need to be answered! One question we’ve got may help a lot of our younger readers (and then, maybe some of our older ones too.) With winter coming on, and many houses equipped with older furnaces or water heaters, it is important that you know how to re-light your pilot light should it go out! Most newer furnaces have an electronic ignition, so you wouldn’t have to light it. But for those that don’t—here’s how! First, find the cover plate next to the gas valve. This will look like a little gray box with a red or black knob on it. It will have three settings: Off, On, and Pilot. Remove the cover plate and you’ll see a little gas line running underneath it. Turn the gas valve to pilot. Push the button in and hold it while holding a long match or grill lighter under the end of the small gas line extending from the back of the gas valve. It may take a few seconds for the gas to purge the air and light. Once you’ve got this lit, you’ll want to hold the button in for a few minutes more to heat up the thermal couple, which is the small copper wire next to the gas line that lets the gas valve know fire is present to maintain the pilot. After you’ve got this ignited, turn the gas valve back to on and you’re good to go!
