Lighting can set the tone of a space, either making it bright and cheerful or dark and mysterious. What you may not have thought of is how lighting fits into the room’s design aesthetic.
It is easy to evoke a lot of different design styles through lighting. One of the most exciting is looking at how other cultures from around the world are interpreting lighting in their homes. Here are three examples of how lighting can add some global influence and completely transform your space.
1. Hanging Lamps
Lamps were the light of choice throughout most of history. Nowhere are these more prevalent than in Morocco. Each lantern is ornate and intricately carved to create traditional patterns. You can utilize these to make a bold statement while also setting a Moroccan motif. Remember, just because you are using traditional lamps doesn’t mean the whole space has to reflect that style. Try mixing it up with modern lines and colors, which will help the contrast between the new and old leave a lasting impression. If you’re really looking for something unique for your business or home, try a custom interior design restaurant chandelier. These can be made specifically to your wishes!
2. Lanterns
Asian lanterns are an easy and architectural way to add some culturally-inspired lighting to your home. They can be muted and understated or bold and eclectic. Have fun with lanterns, as they don’t only have to go on your ceiling! Use them to create a whole motif throughout the room, for example, repeating the lantern theme through art and wall installation.
3. Non-traditional Shades
Lamp shades do not need to be the traditional canvas material. Rather, play with texture and create a bold focal point through lighting. No other culture knows texture like traditional African tribes. Through materials like hemp, grass, and wood, you can add both depth and interest to a space by simply thinking outside of the normal scope of shades available.
