The Halloween Bathroom: A More Detailed DIY

In one of my previous posts, we had a discussion about keeping your bathroom counter organized and free of clutter. That problem will be our greatest challenge with bringing your holiday décor into this tiny prep space. How would you decorate if you had a pedestal sink and no counter? Read on, our fellow DIY’er, read on!

Let’s begin with a recap: bathrooms are areas that are mostly for utility purposes only. Getting ready, showering, doing hair… these are all things that take place here, and good design does not inhibit a room’s main purpose. What good would decorating be if it cluttered up your spaces and didn’t improve the look, feel, or operation of a space? Keep all this in mind when deciding on bathroom décor. You want to avoid using large decorating items with a big footprint. They will only take up prime space on your vanity, and you’ll look forward to putting it away for the winter. Think “less is more” here. A few small votives or leaf accents will be enough to carry the décor through the house, but they are also unobtrusive. Check out these pumpkin votives from http://pommes-frites.blogspot.com. Easy and awesome.

Pumpkin votives!

Try this little DIY idea, the mini pumpkin votive.  You can find mini pumpkins at most grocery stores or craft stores around the holidays.  Start by tracing a tea light sized circle onto the top of the pumpkin.  Hollow out the insides as you would for a jack-o-lantern, and there you have it!  Bathrooms tend to be moist, so try to find the Styrofoam versions of these tiny pumpkins at a craft store.  You can stuff a piece of Styrofoam in the hollow space so that the tea light doesn’t fall through, it won’t mold as quickly because of the moisture, and you can reuse them year after year!  Perfect!

Wow factor. Period.

For a more “spooky” and dark Halloween décor, add lace to some pillar candles like in this mantle decoration.  You can find lace at your craft store and Mod Podge to secure it to the candles.  See if you can find a creepy old photograph online and print it out.  Place it in an old, ornate frame, and you have a spooky photo of a person that.. may now be a ghost!  This could be great on the top of the toilet tank or the corner of your vanity.
