- Have your green contractor define how their trade is capable of being environmentally friendly.
- Do they practice what they preach?
- Ask to see their green credentials. Are they legit or just a rubber stamp?
- How many of their employees have this certification?
- Have them provide references for recent environmentally friendly jobs they have completed within the last year.
- Call to see if you can visit their references.
- Check with the Register of Contractors for current license status.
- Are they a member of the local Green Chamber of Commerce?
- Do they offer green options when it comes to materials and fixtures? Do they offer them as the first option?
- Will the green contractor be there for you to provide continuing education after the project is complete?
The number one thing you should do is educate yourself about the process and products that are used. Ask questions, research and ask more questions. If the contractor doesn’t want to take the time to educate you, then that contractor is not for you. A contractor should be your partner in leading you down the path of conservation.
