DIY Plumbing Tips

Some common mistakes NOT to make!

When it comes to plumbing, there are certain mistakes that a Do It Yourself-er can make. Improvementcenter.com just featured a great article on some of these errors and how to avoid them. These mistakes are usually results of  bad decision making and not unenlightenment. Some of the examples we gleaned from this article?

  • Duct tape is for ducts–not pipes.
  • The slope needed to keep water running smoothly through piping is 1/4″ per foot; and any changes in slope over 4 feet should be made with connectors, not by bending pipes.
  • 90 degree vent elbows are only used for venting ABOVE the water line.
  • Water to tubs and showers cannot exceed 120 degrees and the thermostat on the hot water heater isn’t good enough to gauge that!
